James Andrews

Forward

James “Shant” Andrews was born in Winwick and joined the Warrington club in its rugby union days.  His first game under Northern Union rules came in a 14-6 defeat away to Leigh.  He went on to play 49 times and his final appearance was against Runcorn on Boxing Day, 1900.

James Andrews joined the 6th Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment.  He was presumed dead on 10 August 1915, having been reported as missing during the Gallipoli conflict on 6 August after engaging with the enemy at Suvla Bay.  His battalion was the first to the top of Sari Bair Mountain and momentarily broke the Turkish lines.  However, through lack of support and water they were prevented from consolidating their position and were forced to retreat.  Along with many of his comrades Andrews went missing when the battalion was hit by heavy machine gun fire.  “Shant” was in his 40s when he died.  He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Helles Memorial in Turkey.  He is also remembered on the family grave in St Oswald Cemetery, Winwick.
